The advantages and disadvantages of laminate and vinyl flooring

Flooring Basics

Just as important as deciding the layout, the cabinets and colour scheme throughout your home is deciding what flooring to opt for. For most people the choice often comes down to laminate or vinyl flooring, both offering their own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Laminate flooring is often favoured by homeowners who want hard-wood flooring but can’t afford it. Laminate flooring comes in a wide-range of realistic wood effects including oak, beech and pine, as well as a range of stone effects including marble. Wood-effect laminate flooring is often preferred over similar vinyl alternatives because just like real wood, laminate flooring comes in panels whereas vinyl comes in printed, square tiles.

One of the other main advantages of laminate flooring over vinyl flooring is that laminate is much more durable and therefore resistant to general wear-and-tear and even stains. However, laminate isn’t without its disadvantages. As it is usually advised that a professional lay the laminate flooring and that laminate is usually of a high quality, it is often more expensive than vinyl.

But other being cheaper, there are other advantages to vinyl over laminate. Although wood-effect vinyl tiles aren’t as realistic as laminate, the square shape of the tiles means that there is a variety of other designs to choose from. Modern homes especially prefer the printed, mosaic and embossed designs that are available in vinyl.

As already indicated, one of the benefits to vinyl over laminate is that, unlike laminate, vinyl can be fitted without a professional. And because vinyl is generally cheaper and the overall cost of materials and labour is cheaper too, vinyl is the better choice for homeowners who frequently change their interiors or are perhaps prone to damaging their floor. However, as vinyl often looks ‘cheaper’ than laminate and isn’t as durable or stain-resistant either, vinyl isn’t without its disadvantages. But really, which is better, laminate or vinyl, comes down to what homeowners want out of their flooring.
